The story of Carlo Acutis, venerated as the “Saint of Internet.” A mother’s testimony.
Carlo Acutis (1991–2006) is best known for predicting his premature death from leukemia. He was deeply devoted to the Eucharist. An amateur computer programmer from Italy, he created a site documenting Eucharistic miracles around the world.
Many ask me what the secret is behind the figure of my son Carlo, who in just a few years managed to win the friendship and affection of a multitude of people who now seek his intercession in prayer. Why is a simple boy, who died at fifteen, invoked all over the world? Why did the Church proclaim him Blessed? What, in short, is the “mystery of light” that surrounds him? Many have sought to tell Carlo’s story, yet it is not easy to capture a person’s true self without having had a direct relationship with them. If it is true that “what is essential is invisible to the eye and can only be seen with the heart,” then as Carlo’s mother, I wanted to try writing a book from the heart, to help his many devotees know and love him. A profound, innate sense of faith led my son to open himself to others, especially the marginalized, the poor, and the weak. Carlo lived his life constantly oriented toward God. He used to say that “conversion is a process of subtraction: less of ‘self’ to make room for God.” Like a lighthouse in a dark night, he pierced and illuminated the darkness that held me captive and showed me a path leading toward eternity. The Infinite was his goal, not the finite. Jesus was the center of his life. These are the treasures I attempt to reveal here: Carlo’s treasures—his secret.
