Sperling & Kupfer

Year: 2013

Pages: 299, hardcover

The Third Vatican Council is preparing to meet in a medieval monastery secluded high in the Alps. Pope Boniface IX has called upon Cardinals from all corners of the world, even as far away as Africa and Asia, for no apparent reason. Rumor has it that the meeting is somehow connected to the recent discovery of an ancient document in the Egyptian desert, supposedly containing shocking secrets that date to the dawn of Christianity. When the Pope is late to the Council meeting, the Secretary of His Holiness finds the balcony door of his private apartment open. The Pope’s body is lying facedown in the snow, his back smeared with blood. The investigation to find the Pope’s murderer seems impossible, but Maddelena, the Pope’s blind pianist, is the perfect detective. While the other investigating Cardinals are distracted by what they see, Maddalena’s blindness allows her to focus on other clues. There is more than one Cardinal who has something to hide, and Maddalena strips away their alibis, layer by layer, in her search for the truth.
